As a non-YA reader, I have found most writing in fae stories to be juvenile, even (and especially) for 7-12th graders (which is classified as YA). I have recently become a fan of fae novels - I love the way they are spun from centuries-old legends to become something that could be believable in modern times - but I have been mostly disappointed with what I have read. The way the stories of characters you thought were separate are slowly revealed to be interconnected to each other in a vast and complex web will have you wondering how the author thought all of this up, and how long it took her to weave it so intricately! I thought this was brilliant writing on Livingston's part. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and smile (sometimes at the same time), but only for so long before some action hits you square in the chest. Do not expect a happily-ever-after as this is a very raw and real story of lovers, and as Shakespeare knew, love can often lead to tragedy and madness. The play being performed now is Romeo and Juliet, and like with A Midsummer Night's Dream, the story seems to loosely follow that of the old Shakespearean play. There are plot twists around every corner that will be sure to change your perception of how the world really is (both worlds, actually) and what Dark and Light really are. If you thought you knew the characters in the first book, be prepared to be very much surprised. I absolutely LOVED the sequel! I read it in a day and a half, as I just couldn't put it down. With breathtakingly high stakes, the talented Lesley Livingston delivers soaring romance and vividly magical characters in darklight, the second novel in the trilogy that began with wondrous strange.
